I keep a close watch on ArenaNet's activities. I look out for news that could rally the community. Today, I believe that I have found something interesting. NCsoft posts job opportunities, which is an excellent barometer for the company. The fact that ArenaNet is still hiring people for Guild Wars is a good sign, but I'm not sure what to make of the latest posting. ArenaNet is hiring a Community Team Lead. What happened to Gaile? What's wrong with Regina? What are you up to ArenaNet? An even bigger question arose... is this a job that I would want? I believe that the Guild Wars franchise is heading in the wrong direction. I've looked at the sequel and I'm losing interest. Community management is one of the primary reasons for my concern. This could be an opportunity to turn things around. ...

The weekly scavenger hunt continues. Fortunately, Nicholas the Traveler was still in Prophecies territory. I could easily wander over to the Reed Bog and find him. His recent progress through Tyria has seemed more consistent. Instead of popping up all over the world, Nicholas seems to be traveling normally through Chapter 1. Perhaps this is ArenaNet's way of encouraging players to finish up the game. If you averaged 1-2 missions per week, you could finish all three campaigns by the end of the year... maybe even the expansion. Guild Wars 2 might launch in 2011, so this might be a classy way to prepare players for the sequel. Next week's location could destroy this theory, but for now Nicholas is easy to find.

I got a little grumpy yesterday. Massively.com started a new Guild Wars feature. I think that's a good thing. The problem is that the first article contained a listing of Guild Wars Fansites... and this fansite was not included in the list. Is this fansite somehow less important because it doesn't have an active forum? I've been thinking about this topic seriously for a while now. This site should have a forum, but shouldn't ArenaNet have an official forum? In one fatal swoop, ArenaNet could render all of the fansite forums obsolete. Do I really want to work hard on building a community when it could be overshadowed by an official forum? I'm a bit confused. I'm not sure what's the best way to proceed.

Not too long ago, I was in Gunnar's Hold. That's nothing new. I'm there a lot. What was unusual was the dialogue. The outpost was filled with conversation about Guild Wars 2. Some of it was negative. If I remember correctly, I saw the word "Vaporware" used to describe the sequel. Who knows? Maybe GW2 will join Duke Nukem in a series of indefinite postponements. But a quick glance of the ArenaNet job listings makes me highly skeptical of such a possibility. Just last week, two new "contract" jobs were posted... Character Artist and Junior Writer/Editor. Not only is this an excellent opportunity for an aspiring game developer, this is reassurance that ArenaNet is working hard on the sequel.

I was preparing myself to pass on this week's scavenger hunt. I only have one character now - TANK. I'm also Guildless in Guild Wars. To better prepare for Guild Wars 2, I'm starting from scratch. I figured that I wouldn't be able to participate in the fun, not with the majority of Tyria unexplored. But this week, Nicholas is in Krytan territory. I only needed to complete two more missions to get close enough to the action. Since I was planning to complete those missions anyway, I decided to make a run for it. I took my Survivor Ranger into undiscovered territory... undiscovered to TANK anyway.

Christmas is a great time of the year. There's only one problem, that depressing feeling you get after the holiday is over... no more gifts to give... decorations to be packed and pushed into a dark corner of a forgotten closet. I could feel this crushing emotion in Guild Wars as well... no more festivities... less random loot... it was just disheartening. The long nights of January could use some random happiness. Well thankfully, since ArenaNet had some technical difficulties with the original Wintersday celebration, it's coming back. Their folly extends the holly and the jolly! The official message explains the details.

This week's scavenger hunt was a refreshing change. It was easy! It was a battle against the undead in the lands of Kryta. That's a low-level area, with monster levels in the teens. These dark creatures are highly vulnerable to fire. It's also an occasion where a smite Monk can truly shine, with their damage bonus against the undead! The action starts at Bergen Hot Springs, traveling through Nebo Terrace, to the Cursed Lands. Just wipe out some undead hordes, collect 15 Decayed Orr Emblems, and then see Nicholas The Traveler for your prize.
